Bath cabinet here we use a horizontal approach - 1" White Oak lumber slats with 3/16" gaps. Clear finish on natural wood keeps it real with no staining going.  Staining wood always says to me -  "mass production !"
 

 

 This is a Jatoba wood kitchen.  We left the Apple plywood edging showing because it give a nice framework.
